St Peter's Parish Church, Petersfield

Welcome

This is a wonderful building, the main part of which has stood in this community for over 800 years. It is a house of God and a place of prayer where local people have worshipped Sunday by Sunday since mediaeval times. This building is the link for the generations and through the centuries of the hopes and fears of the people.. in times of war as well as peace, in times of poverty as well as plenty. The monuments and very stones themselves testify to the history of the people of the town.

The building has recently been reordered and restored in order to serve the people more effectively, not only as a focus of the worship of God around the nave altar but also creating space for cultural events to take place.

All are welcome and the hope of the congregation of St Peter's is that this church may remind its visitors of the God whom we know in Jesus Christ who revealed the meaning of life by his teaching, his death on the cross and his resurrection.

Giles Harris-Evans - Vicar

Petersfield: St Peter
Petersfield: St Peter

From mother church at
Buriton (or Mapledurham
as then called) -
a chapel built across the swamps with later aisles
and tower installed -
evolved progressively
towards the handsome
building now revealed -
this early Norman
cruciform became
St Peter's-in-the-field.
